We have come to the end of the cryptology awareness series related to secret and encoded messages. I have a few others like sign language, naval comms, zodiac alphabet, but by now you’ve gotten the point and are ready to start approaching potential encoded messages with strategy. The last two pages are about how to approach encoded messages to decode them. When you play scrabble think of grammatical construction in the English language and common syllables to help you form words. When you play Wheel of Fortune think about what are the most common (frequency analysis) letters, etc. If approaching a rotating cipher map it out and attempt shifts on paper to see what it reveals, but start with three letter blocks if blocks exist, as “the” is common in the English language. Have fun!
